Jeremiah Steen's Strategic Priorities

Jeremiah's Focus

Jeremiah Steen is dedicated to transforming Detroit Public Schools into a beacon of opportunity and excellence. At 23 years old, he brings a fresh perspective and a commitment to making every student’s voice heard. Jeremiah’s campaign centers around empowering youth, preparing students for future careers, and retaining local talent to build a vibrant community.

Reconnecting Generations

The Problem:

Student voices are underrepresented in school governance, leading to disengagement and a lack of ownership in their educational journey. According to a recent survey, only 40% of Detroit high school students feel they have a say in important school decisions. This disconnect between students and the decision-making process undermines their potential for active participation and empowerment.

Jeremiah’s Solution:

Empowering Student Voices: Jeremiah Steen will enhance student board member elections, ensuring students have a real voice in shaping policies that affect their lives. By increasing student involvement in curriculum development and school governance, we can reconnect generations within the school system, fostering a sense of responsibility, engagement, and unity.

Other Area(s) of Focus:

Addressing School Discipline & School-to-Prison Pipeline: Increasing restorative justice practices to reduce suspensions and expulsions, thereby dismantling the school-to-prison pipeline and fostering a more supportive school environment.

Retaining Talent

The Problem:

Detroit faces a significant challenge in retaining its young talent. Despite 70% of Detroit students aspiring to stay and work in their hometown, many leave due to a lack of career opportunities and support. This talent drain weakens our community and hampers economic growth.

Jeremiah’s Solution:

Keeping Talent in Detroit: Jeremiah’s goal is to create an educational environment that not only educates but also inspires students to build their futures in Detroit. By offering high-quality experiences, robust career pathways, and a supportive community, we can make staying in Detroit an attractive option for graduates. This approach will help retain talent, boost our local economy, and build a stronger, more vibrant community.

Other Area(s) of Focus:

School Funding: Advocating for equitable funding to ensure all schools have the resources they need to provide a high-quality education.Disparities in funding can lead to significant gaps in educational outcomes.

School Board Accountability: Implementing transparent measures to hold the school board accountable for decisions and outcomes, ensuring that policies and practices are effectively addressing the needs of students and the community.

Student and Parent Voice: Creating platforms for students and parents to actively participate in decision-making processes, ensuring their voices are heard and their perspectives are considered.

Reimagining Futures

The Problem:

Many Detroit students lack access to career pathways that prepare them for high-demand fields. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 15% growth in AI and technology jobs over the next decade, yet only 30% of our students feel adequately prepared for these careers. Without proper guidance and resources, our students risk missing out on these lucrative opportunities.

Jeremiah’s Solution:

Building Future-Ready Pathways: Jeremiah is committed to developing comprehensive career pathways in AI and technology. By partnering with local businesses and tech companies, we can provide students with internships, mentorships, and hands-on training. This initiative will connect our students with future opportunities, ensuring they are competitive and prepared for tomorrow’s job market.

Other Area(s) of Focus:

Mental Health Support: Ensuring that every school has access to mental health resources and professionals to support student well-being. A 2021 report indicated that 1 in 5 students in Detroit suffer from mental health issues, highlighting the critical need for these services.

Culturally Responsive Curriculum: Developing a curriculum that reflects the diverse cultural backgrounds of students, promoting inclusivity and understanding.
